Consumer prices rise for first time since start of pandemic – CSO

The annual rate of consumer inflation rose by 1.1% in April, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office.

This marks the first positive annual rate since March of last year.

The main factors behind the prices increases last month were higher energy and fuel prices.

On an annual basis, petrol is up 8.4%, diesel is up 7% while the price of home heating oil is up 28.5%.

Today’s figures show that the price of gas was down just over 2% while the price of electricity was up just over 8%.

Air fares went up 16% in the month of April compared to March but they are still down 43% compared to April 2020.

The prices of alcoholic drinks and tobacco were also up.

Prices for food, clothing and furnishings all saw declines in April, the CSO said.
